Secretary Austin Remains Hospitalized

He is heading the Defense Department from Walter Reed.

The Pentagon stated that Secretary Lloyd Austin is in good condition but remains hospitalized at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, recovering from complications following surgery for prostate cancer. While he is hospitalized, Secretary Austin has remotely resumed all of his duties as leader of the Department of Defense.

“He’s in contact with his senior staff and has full access to required secure communications capabilities and continues to monitor DOD’s day-to-day operations worldwide,” stated Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder.

The defense secretary’s hospitalization caused a stir after he did not disclose it to either the Pentagon or the president for four days. This secrecy is highly unusual and potentially dangerous if a national security emergency would have occurred, leaving the Defense Department without a head during the critical time for an initial response. Secretary Austin’s undisclosed hospitalization has triggered a congressional investigation, a White House delegation protocol review, and various ongoing discussions.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the defense secretary’s complete recovery from prostate cancer.
  • For the medical personnel at Walter Reed as they provide care for Secretary Austin.
  • For the president and his advisors as they consider how to prevent a recurrence of a Cabinet member being unable to function in their role without knowledge or disclosure to the administration.
